It varies, but most landlords that run respectable properties will require an application and processing fee, so it is a good idea to narrow down your selections to just a few before you start submitting applications and racking up fees.

Often, the fee is used to compensate the landlord for the time it takes to file your application, process any Section 8 or other special housing paperwork, or to cover the cost of a credit check.

A standard application fee is usually around $20.
